Welcome
New Jersey Department
Of the Civil War
G.A.R. Documentation Project
The New Jersey Department is currently in the process of seeking out as much GAR related material as can be located with in the state. This could become an endless project, but we hope to at least locate all of the publicly stored artifacts that are on display and or in safe keeping with in the confines of a museum, library, armory or historical society. We are concerned with the preservation of these artifacts because in a lot of cases, these is only one of a kind. What we are doing is documenting these items with a special form that we have created list what the item is, what kind of condition it is in, where it is located and what post it may have belonged to. This compiled information will then act as research tool when people inquire about a specific GAR post or member. Artifacts that we are looking for would be charters, post record books, sketch books, minutes books, stationary, badges, flags and Civil War items that were donated by the members to the posts. We have three documented areas at this time - The New Jersey GAR Archive Page, The New Jersey GAR Museum located at the Lawrenceville Armory and the Vineland Historical Society. Our committee chairman for this project is Bro. Bob Wilhelm, if anyone has any information that could help in our search, please contact him at - SecondPaHa@aol.com.
LOVE With Love his bloody hands. scarred from the eternity away from his family surrounded by nothing but death and carnage of war. He stands tough, with fire in his eyes and victory on his breath. He looks at us now in anger and disgust and tells us this... read it. I fought in the snow barefoot to give you the freedom to vote and you stay at home because it rains. I left my family destitute to give you the freedom of speech and you remain silent on critical issues, because it might be bad for business. I orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and it has stolen democracy from the people. It's the soldier not the reporter who gives you the freedom of the press. It's the soldier not the poet who gives you the freedom of speech. It's the soldier not the campus organizer who allows you to demonstrate. It's the soldier who salutes the flag, serves the flag, whose coffin is draped with the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag!!! "Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen." in Afghanistan, and the ones facing deployment to Iraq at this very moment - AND all over this world. Do not stop the wheel, please....Of all the gifts you could give a US Soldier, Prayer is the very best one.....
After hearing that the state of Florida changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with her face covered this is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please!

Of the New Jersey Department - of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). For those of you who may not be quite familiar with our organization, here is a little background history on us. Purpose - We exist to:
Perpetuate the memory of the Union in 1861 to 1865; Assist in every practicable way in the preservation and making available for research of documents and records pertaining to the Grand Army of the Republic and its members Cooperate in doing honor to all those who have patriotically served our country in any war Teach patriotism and the duties of citizenship, the true history of our country, and the love and honor of our flag. Oppose every tendency or movement that would weaken loyalty to, or make for the destruction or impairment of, our constitutional Union and Inculcate and broadly sustain the American principles of representative government, of equal rights, and of impartial justice for all. What We Do - Our many activities and projects include: Through our Graves Registration Committee, we seek out the graves of Union soldiers, Sailors, and Marines Damaged headstones on known graves are replaced; We observe the care and upkeep of Civil War Monuments and Memorials, and notify the proper authorities of any failure to do so. Along with other Veteran and Patriotic organizations we participate in ceremonies and parades to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Military, placing special emphasis on those who have sacrificed their life or limbs in the service of their Country. We also promote the study and preservation of the history of the Union troops of 1861-1865 and assist members in researching their ancestors' participation in the War of the Rebellion. How We Do This -We do this by continuing the rituals, traditions and services of the Grand Army of the Republic. These include:
the proper observance of Memorial Day; Allegiance to the Government of the United States of America; the teaching and encouragement of Patriotism and love of Country; the perpetuation of its Free Institutions and the preservation of the Constitution. The New Jersey Department of the SUVCW represents the middle tier of a three-level national organization. It consists of several local camps which function as the first level of the SUVCW. These Camps contain the membership and serve as the backbone of the organization. Since New Jersey contains three or more Camps, it is considered a Department, or the middle management of the national Order. Through the guidance of its officers, the New Jersey Department acts as a liaison to the National Organization, which functions as the highest level of the SUVCW. This includes all national officers and the Council of Administration which serves as the Board of Directors. Assisting us in our endeavors is our Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
